still life with bagna caoda

the snow may have been sparse in italy, but the food and wine were bountiful. we feasted on pizzas, foccacia sandwiches stuffed with speck and rucola, lasagne, and polenta steaming with tomato sauce and salsiccia.

but the most extravagantly gluttonous meal was undoubtedly our dinner at la maison di filippo in entreves. for antipasti, we had red peppers roasted with anchovies, cold cuts, butter beans, onions simmered with raisins, thin slices of cow's tongue in tomato (OK, only some of us tried that one), and warm cooked ham with potatoes and apple sauce.

we shared an array of pastas and polenta, and then came the secondis: trout cooked with almonds, roast chicken, bagna caoda.

a massive trifle of gelato, whipped cream and chocolate sauce came out, as did a medley of cooked fruit: chesnuts, figs, raisins, plums.

and then we waddled home.
