Apparently Islington village has been around since medieval times, serving for centuries as an overnight stop for herders bringing their cattle for slaughter to Smithfield Market - hence the many old pubs lining the road to The City.
King Henry VIII hunted fowl in Islington, and Queen Elizabeth I had a hunting lodge here. And I love one history that says Islington in the 1500s was famous for as a spot for harboring fugitives, counterfeiting coins and waging duels.
