one last view from courmayeur

the last half of the last day, i split off from the others and took a few runs by myself. this always means trouble because i have an aversion to maps and no sense of direction. unlike in the U.S., there are no ski ambassadors - or cute ski patrols - to herd errant skiers like me back onto the last run of the day.

so while fiz and sophie were no doubt enjoying hot chocolate, i was desperately trying to figure out how to get back to plan checrouit at courmayeur for the last gondola home. every chair lift i came to was closed, and i started to panic: there was not a soul in sight, and i was having sudden visions of having to hike down the mountain by foot, all night, in my snowboard boots, with foxes racing alongside me.

there was one closed run that looked like it might lead in the direction i needed to head, but no snow - just a narrow, foot-wide dribble of slush. my heart racing, i ducked under the rope and maneuvered my way down the path and - blessedly - it led to a run with snow. and i zipped up to the lift 2 minutes after it was to have closed but this being italy, the liftie let me on. phew!
