a digression: the thing about being "oriental" in the "occident" is that you can't find everything you need at sainsbury's, like short-grained rice or kikkoman soy sauce or napa cabbage. i miss those days of going to the local bodega and picking up kimchi (not to mention a stack of corn tortillas for $1).
but it has forced me to be inventive. i bought a bag of bones for 50 pence and am making a beef broth for rice cake soup, and i sliced my own bulgogi for the first time, with the beautiful knife todd & di bought me for my birthday.
