a very american dance troupe

i think these images show off the strength and energy that is so a part of an alvin ailey dance performance. what these photos don't reveal so readily is the sass: it's nice to see dancers so expressive - and individualistic - even in such a big and established company.

i loved "pas de duke" - danced by linda celeste sims (above) and matthew rushing (music courtesy duke ellington) - with its limber mix of classical ballet and modern-day jazz and the duo's playful courtship in satin. see a video clip here.

in 1976, (the diminuitive) mikhail baryshnikov danced the "pas de duke" with (the statuesque) judith jamison, two years after his defection from the USSR and at the height of his career as a ballet dancer. what i would give to go back in time to see it live.

francis was so inspired he ran right out and bought a white satin suit and jazz-dance shoes.
