racist or just crazy?

as i was waiting outside sainsbury's for the light to change, the woman standing next to me starting saying something to me. i was listening to usher and couldn't hear a word.

"pardon?" i asked, taking my headphones out of my ears.

"why don't you try to learn english since you're in this country? or go back to the poor country you came from."

"the 'poor country' i came from is the united states, and it's richer than yours," i said (nanny nanny boo-boo!).

"oh, so the U.S. gave you a passport. well, that doesn't mean anything. you should go back to where you came from and stop taking from those who deserve it!"

at this point, i realized conversation was pointless. i told her to "sod off." i think she was crazy, but sometimes the crazies have a freudian way of revealing what the sane people might be thinking, too.

this is not a country built by immigrants. but britain - and riot-ridden france, the netherlands and other european nations with low birthrates - need immigrants if they want to keep their economies churning. it's time to start accepting and embracing immigration, and to rethink who they call british, french, dutch, american.
