el obrero
the first time i went to el obrero - "the laborer" - in la boca was with ben and jim. we had walked along the waterfront from puerto madero, not realizing how sketchy it was. after we left the waterfront and wandered into the barrio, a stray dog attached himself to us. he jogged along with us, our little bodyguard, as we meandered through la boca, sometimes trotting ahead and looking back to make sure we were still on the right path. he stayed with us 'til we got to el obrero, tucked away on so nondescript a street that not even cabbies know where it is.
el obrero is a real guys' place: boca juniors and boxing pictures and paraphernelia everywhere. kind of rough, no women in sight, long lunches, wine, steak. everytime i go back, the same waiter with the twinkling eyes, francisco, is always there, suggesting a little late-night dancing.
de primero, ensalada mixta: lechuga y tomate y cebolla. de segundo, bife de lomo con papas fritas - jugoso. vino tinto, naturalmente. flan y cafe. muy, muy rico! (check out the prices: 8 ARS is $2.72!)
