happy birthday, kate!

kate celebrated two milestones in one week: her birthday (happy 21st! again!) and gaining her british citizenship. (quick quiz: who is guy fawkes?)

i had a second pseudo-thankgiving dinner with kim, kate, angela and michael (offsides drinking champagne) - OK, we cheated: we had leftover turkey from beth's thanksgiving dinner. but we did have brussels sprouts prepared two ways - with bacon and pine nuts, and with chesnuts and pine nuts; a green salad with a medley of tomatoes; rocket salad with parmesan and pomegranate seeds; sweet potatoes with red onions; ciabatta; and butternut squash pasta.

we had apple tarts and figs for dessert. and lots of white wine to go around.

apparently yams aren't called yams here. when i went to chapel market to get my veg, i asked for yams. the boy working at his family's stall turned to his father and asked, completely confused: "what's a 'yam?'"
