artichokes at campo de'fiore
when i was 12, a neighbor showed me how to eat artichokes, steamed with a wedge of lemon, the leaves dipped into melted butter.
when i was living in california, i visited an organic farmer in watsonville, strawberry capital of the world, who had made the bold step of a "new"kind of farming - old skool, with no pesticides. he handed me four artichokes the size of globes and fat, luscious hearts. delicious.
when we went to rome in april, the first thing we did was scope out a restaurant: da giggetto, in the heart of the old jewish quarter. crates outside were piled high with artichokes. we had the carciofi alla giudea - deep-fried artichokes - and the baccala to start. take a look at the menu.
