searching for the gare-ahj

there's a hotel restaurant i've wanted to try because they have sweetcorn fritters on the menu, so slam & i wandered down there on the bank holiday. except that i failed to look it up on streetmap.co.uk, which meant all i had was the address - 86-88 clerkenwell road - which is as good as nothing since the buildings numbers don't run in any discernible order. after finding 123 clerkenwell, and 61 across the street, but no 86, i phoned.

"do you see the gare-ahj?"
"uh, i don't see a garage, but what is the cross street? are you east or west of farringdon road?"
"we're right next to the gare-ahj, on clerkenwell road."
"ok, but is that east or west of farringdon road?"
"we're very close to farringdon road, right by the gare-ahj."

right.

we found it, three blocks away from 85 clerkenwell road. go figure. not sure what a gare-ahj is but there was a gas station next to the hotel.

i ended up skipping the sweetcorn fritters and having avocado on toast with pancetta and poached eggs and fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. slam had scrambled eggs and a latte. we read a story about noodling - some hick form of catfish fishing where you use your (soon-to-be-bloody) hand as bait - in the guardian.
