first, we could see la sagrada familia from the distance - strange spires topped by what looked like pineapples jutting into the sky like spikes. walking closer to it, i couldn't believe my eyes - who would design such a thing, who would pay for it, and yet who wouldn't embrace it?! it is fantastical, immense, grandiose and ambitious.
gaudi spent 40 years on the temple, apparently living and working there non-stop until he died in 1926. and construction goes on, with the goal of completing la sagrada familia by 2026 for the centennial of his death.
