Rule No. 1: don't attempt to organize a trip to chamonix at the same time as british half-term (i.e., school vacation).
Rule No. 2: book early
we had a hellish time finding last-minute lodging. when we arrived at chamonix, it was hard to believe every single room in a town heaving with lodging was filled. we ended up in a little, yellow two-star hotel called le montagnard run by the most chic couple and their funny little bulldog like puppy.
we did eat well, though. one night we - well, cathy, isabelle & mayumi - had fondue and pierrade at l'impossible, a converted barn. for the pierrade, they brought out a sizzling hot stone sprinkled with salt and we cooked the beef ourselves. call it savoyarde bulgogi...
