flamenco

a couple years ago, when viola & i went out to los angeles for july 4th weekend, we went to el cid not far from elizabeth's old place in silverlake to drink wine and see flamenco. it was touristy and typical but so much fun.
(btw, here is an interesting tidbit about el cid from the club web site: El Cid was built in 1900 by D.W. Griffith. He modeled this venue after a 16th century Spanish Opera House. He filmed "Birth of a Nation", the first "talkie" movie here. This is a charming oasis in the city. There is a courtyard that makes you feel as though you're in New Orleans. El Cid serves topas as well as the finest Spanish food in the city. There is a beautiful stage, wooden dance floor and beautiful red booths.)
some time later, in brooklyn, we drank sangria and ate tapas at a small spanish bar in brooklyn and watched a small flamenco ensemble called the brunn project. i am still on their mailing list.
well, i saw the flamenco maestra sara baras here in london, and it was one of the best shows - of any kind - i have ever seen, from the music to the dance and the lighting and the costumes. simply stunning.

Oh the flamenco at Sadlers Wells is amazing, didnt i go with you and Elena shortly after you moved to London ? or was that something else ? I know i went with Owain at Valentines one year and it was hardcore ! you should go up to this tiny place on Inverness street in Camden some time. I think Marianna knows the one ...
