it's interesting to see how british asian arts and culture (translation in american english: south asian british) have developed in this country, informed by all the things that come with springing from an "immigrant" community (how many generations do you have to live in a country before you are no longer considered an immigrant??). for me, what's most interesting is that moment when you understand that a piece of work is not, say, "british asian" anymore, but truly "british," as much a part of the national landscape as the royal family or, say, monty python.
i haven't read gautam malkani's "londonstani" yet - which a headline in a book review summed up as "a taste of gansta sikh" - but apparently it's about British Asian rude boys and inspired the latest work by choreographer shobana jeyasingh, which we went to see at the south bank centre (with kamala, above, featured in the second piece, exit no exit).
