look into any london restaurants in the lead-up to christmas and you'll see grown adults wearing crowns, tiaras, santa hats and all manner of frivolity. (on christmas day, of course, the entire city shuts down, going from pre-christmas mania to virtual ghost town.)
we pulled open our christmas crackers and inside were these crepe crowns. i was chuffed to see that christmas crackers are a local thing: apparently, a clerkenwell baker called tom smith invented them in 1847.
we celebrated with a spread of food and some good red wine. michael's delicious eggplant parmigiana was the star! i downed about half a bottle of lactaid and it was well worth the risk of OD'ing on lactase.
afterward, we played a mean game of mahjong. (well, truth be told, we didn't really know the rules and made them up as we went along.) i suppose it didn't help that we were taking liberal sips from joji's gift exchange prize: a bottle of puerto rican rum that frank brought back from san juan!
