moules-frites en bruxelles. finalement!

photo stolen from restaurant web site

the last time i was in brussels i was excited to have some authentic belgian mussels. but i was foiled! i was there two weeks before the start of mussels season. DRATS! i was instructed that mussels only really thrive in the months with an "R" in the name - november, december, etc.

so. i finally got my true moules-frites yesterday en bruxelles at a restaurant called francois. the mussels were plump and juicy and pungent with garlic, onion and parsley. i may never be able to eat again at belgo again.

on my next trip i will make it a goal to try waterzooi, another belgian specialty: stew.

the most amazing thing about brussels is that everyone speaks at least three languages: french, dutch, english, and in some cases, flemish, german and then whatever foreign language they learned at school.
