cycling in copenhagen

copenhagen is a city built for cyclists: flat, with beautiful canals, and an easy-going populace that travels every where by bike. cycles are piled up everywhere, every which way; and for those who like to cycle to the nightlife and get drunk, the cabs come with a bike rack. brilliant.

it can be hard to avoid looking dorky when you're cycling, especially in congested central london, where the lack of bike lanes and steady stream of traffic typically compel cyclists to don helmets, gas masks, neon vests, gloves, a zillion lights and to tuck their trousers into their socks and to wrap reflectors around their ankles for good measure. see here.

in contrast, danes take their design seriously - and this extends to cycling. compare here. a danish company, yakkay, makes perhaps the most stylish helmets (though i saw few people over the age of 10 wearing any in copenhagen).

after much cajoling - some might say pressuring - we convinced kim to get on a bike for her first time in years. here we are tooding around the hippie enclave of christiania.
