


i think michael is going to miss me mainly because he won't have a partner in chili crime who is guaranteed to over-spice the food, leaving her hapless dinner guests sweating buckets with their tongues hanging out. so he we will simply have to meet me not in st. louis but in sichuan province.
we went for a dose of sichuan spice at angeles in kilburn recently. we ordered mapo tofu, aubergine and tofu, greens, and dan dan noodles. stumped for a fish dish, we asked the impatient waitress for a suggestion. she recommended the halibut in a spicy soup. what emerged was pieces of fish swimming - n0, drowning - in a sea of red peppers. what really killed us, though, were the frightening little peppers that numbed our mouths and made us pant.
i had "sichuan stomachache" afterward. but it was worth it.
