mom is always cooking, even on her birthday at an outdoor bbq restaurant! this was a particularly delicious meal on nami island: spicy marinated chicken and pork, dwengjang chigae and a nice array of banchan - all grilled over flaming hot coals and washed down with korean beer.
nami island is best known as the setting for a korean "drama" (duh-rah-ma) called "winter sonata" that was all the rage some years back. i was in seoul during the height of winter sonata rage and the actor's image was plastered on everything, including socks and underwear. what better way for bae yong-joon to keep us warm??
nami island is also known for its lush avenues of pine trees. mom remembers hearing - while growing up - about the plans mr. minn, her father's best friend, had for nami island in the years after the korean war. it was her first trip to nami island - nearly 40 years after she first left south korea - to see the trees he'd long spoke of planting in full bloom.
