subverted senses

the antony gormley exhibit at the hayward gallery was one of the most intriguing i've seen all year. i was familiar with the sculptures he created for the akram khan-sidi larbi cherkaoui dance piece "zero degrees" - eerily stolid yet pliable replicas of the dancers themselves - but seeing the range of his work was a revelation.

blind light, above, is a cloud of a box suffused with light and vapor; you can't see more than a foot in front of you yet you can hear the voices of the 24 others around you. where are they? who are they? it's disorienting, but for me, not unlike being caught in a fierce snowstorm. megumi fled after a minute; francesca & ryan savored the sensory assault.

& there were 30 more gormley statuettes affixed on rooftops across london. trying to spot them all was like playing a game. i never found all 30.
