halmoni grew up speaking korean at home and japanese at school, and for many, many years correspondended regularly with friends who returned to japan after the end of the occupation in 1945.
i love this photo because it shows korea in flux: my halmoni in a hanbok, a stylish mademoiselle in western dress and a girl in a kimono.
