after realizing it might be *slightly* ridiculous to get my own tortilla press to make my own corn tortillas (that's a project for another day) and to haul back a suitcase of habanero sauce, chipotle and salsas, i resigned myself to hunting down the ingredients in london.angela and i met at borough market (mmm: lamb burgers, falafel, french cheeses, fresh pasta, chutney) and after doing 60 turns 'round the two markets finally got the bright idea of asking.
the one mexican food stall was sadly not as mobbed as other stalls (londoners just LOVE to queue up if they know there's a lamb burger at the other end) but i trust i gave them enough business in one fell swoop to warrant their wonderful existence. i got fresh corn tortillas, real poblano chilies, habanero sauce, jalapenos and an array of dried chilies. woohoo!
i spent so much time eating and shopping that i was late getting home to prepare for my taco fiesta. kim and michael were punished for arriving on time like good guests and were put to work as sous chefs.
they brought a delicious guac dip and helped me peel the poblano chiles for rajas. kim - who is a vegetarian - even took her turn cooking my london version of chorizo and sausage! that's real friendship.
here was our taco menu, served with fresh corn tortillas, refried beans, homemade guacamole and salsa, and several types of salsa brought over from norteamerica:
- papas con rajas (roasted poblanos with potatoes)
- english herb sausages with potatoes and green chilies
- carne asada
- portobello mushrooms and asparagus
