crazy homies

since abandoning the americas i have missed one culinary quirk something fierce: TACOS. not tex-mex hard-shell "tacos" slathered with neon-colored processed cheese and old el paso salsa, but real, mexican tacos: corn tortillas with shredded pork or beef and a sprinkle of cilantro on top. well, my friends, my time here in london has not been wasted: i think i've found some decent tacos after a year's research. i might just survive in london!

_ crazy homies. tom (son of sir terence) conran's little mexican joint next to lucky seven and down the road from the westbourne & the cow dining room. we squeezed into a booth at the front and ordered the street food platter, which came piled high with tacos, ceviche, quesadillas and two little sangritas shots - delish! felt like we were in an east village hole decorated for el dia de los muertos. two skeletal thumbs up for crazy homies and a big gracias to athan for taking us there. (photos coming soon.) the pomegranate margaritas were muy, muy bien.

_ mestizo. upscale and run by a lovely family from guadalajara (if i recall correctly). the taco tray is DIY: carnitas, barbacoa, tinga, cochinita, guacamole, refried beans, pico de gallo. check out the menu and drool.

_ cafe pacifico. the old covent garden standby. the street food platter was good - authentic if a tad greasy. but it's such a lively place, with excellent margaritas.

_ one more to try: taqueria, fun by the fine cool chile folks who distribute real mexican ingredients. i'll be back with a review. in the meantime, megumi brought me a carryon bag full of salsas... maybe i should open my own taco stand?
