(allen) in love with maggie jones

girls, i hate to break your hearts, but allen's got a new love and her name is maggie jones. he could not stop raving about maggie jones.

i asked the waiter who maggie jones is - poor guy probably gets that question at least three times a night, and he's not even british. apparently, maggie is short for margaret - princess margaret - and jones is the man she married. the garcon was unable to tell me if maggie was still alive. (RIP!)

we started off with a globe of artichoke in a vinaigrette that had the tenderest heart ever, and cornish smoked mackerel. i had the rack of lamp encrusted with garlic and rosemary; allen had the medallions of veal in the west riding sauce, with braised red cabbage and pencil frites. we had a side of spinach and red wine. for dessert, i had lemon sorbet.

it's a very traditional british menu - real old-fashioned comfort food, well-done, and the tavern is very romantic. i can picture dashing princess maggie, in shades and a big hat, slipping out of the palace and into one of the booths to meet mr. armstrong-jones during their courtship.
