legend has it christopher columbus - who set sail for the americas from cadiz - brought the palm trees to cadiz. felipe, who's a native gaditano, says if it weren't for the sandbars preventing the ships laden with goods from sailing inland, cadiz would have remained the dominant city in the region, not seville.
i loved the strangely tropical feel of cadiz. it's as though columbus brought a bit of the caribbean back to espana.
