when i was a child, i used to wait for that evening every winter when a three-hour section of the TV guide would be blocked off with the words: The Sound of Music. and we would sit as close to the TV as our parents would let us with a bowl of noodles to sing "Doe, a deer, a female deer" and fantastize about the day when we'd have our own Rolf when we were 16-going-on-17.

cindy took me to see the London staging of the musical at the Palladium. apart from the old couple next to me humming along (not that i didn't want to do the same!) and the fat lady behind me eating biscuits from a crinkly packet, it was pure fun. listen to the lonely goatherd here.

but is it fiction? according to the BBC:
  • The real von Trapps married in 1927, not 1938
  • Escaped by train to Italy, not by foot to Switzerland
  • Children's names were changed
  • Edelweiss was written for the musical - it's not an anthem
  • Eldest child was a son, not daughter
oh well. who wants to join me for the singalong??

when i was in boarding school in michigan, everyone said one of the security guys there was the youngest boy von trapp. dont know why someone would make that up. we called the security guys crotchies, i dont know why on that one either. for all i know youngest boy von trapp was the one that caught me smoking and nearly got me kicked out of school
