a writer made el rey of taco crawls - up my beloved Highway 1 between San Francisco and Los Angeles - and wrote about it for the New York Times. why didn't i think of this?! brilliant. and i can certainly appreciate any fellow taco obsessiveness. check out the link to the blogger whose entire site - and, apparently, life - is devoted to the hunt for the perfect taco.
i look back, with nostalgia, to those days in california and even new york when i could wander into any old bodega and get corn tortillas and habanero sauce (as we all kimchi in the more enlightened - ok, korean-owned - places). yesterday i bought some flour tortillas - not my first choice - at sainsbury's and they were spoiled! this, of course, is a country that has not yet discovered the joys of air conditioning, so i'm not surprised. if you thought britain was in the first world, think again. until they learn to appreciate tacos and get A/C, it remains relegated to the status of "developing nation" in my book.

Check out today's NYT; Bittman has an article about making tacos at home. We're going to England in Sept. Will smuggle you some tortillas, but can't do anything about the lack of A/C. - Jean[nie Kim]
