the shakespearean stage

we played tourist and went on a guided tour of the globe theatre on bankside, a theatre rebuilt not on the original site of the globe but nearby, and the best replica of the theatre shakespearean and elizabethan experts could fashion without specific sketches of the original structure. click here to see some video from the globe.

the season begins next week and for 5 GBP, you can be a modern-day groundling and lean up against the stage for a closehand shakespearean experience.

i like imagining thrill-seeking, sinning londoners of all shapes and class catching boats on the Thames that took them from the walled City to devilish Bankside, where you could watch the theatre, drink and gamble. apparently queen elizabeth was an avid bear baiter.

b and i played Gladiator in the gift shop with little roman russell crowe puppets. famous last words: "someone's gotta die!"
